Life: Born in Mass.; lived in Worcester Co., Mass., in 1790; died in Hinsdale, Catt. Co., N.Y..

Matthias Lane (1759–1850)

A Revolutionary War soldier with ties to Cattaraugus County.

Life: Born May 19, 1759; died in Farmersville, Catt. Co., N.Y..

Service: Granted a pension on July 18, 1834, for service as a dragoon in the N.Y. Continental Troops; other records suggest New Jersey service.

John Kimball (1760–1839)

A Revolutionary War Soldier with ties to Cattaraugus County.

Service: Extensive service in Connecticut units (1776–1782) under Captains Green, Mosely, and Riley. He was notably engaged at the Siege of Yorktown.

Life: Born in CT; died in West Valley, NY. He was buried on his own farm, and his grave was marked with an inscribed stone.

Jedediah Hubbard

A Revolutionary War Soldier with ties to Cattaraugus County.

Service: Private in Wadsworth’s Brigade of the Connecticut Militia in 1776.

Life: Received a pension in Cattaraugus Co. in September 1833 at age 74.

Jazaniah Howe (1752–1838)

A Revolutionary War Soldier with ties to Cattaraugus County.

Background: Born in Massachusetts, he died in either Gowanda or Ellicottville, NY, in March 1838 and is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in Gowanda, NY.

Military Service: Enlisted in 1781 and served until June 1783. He received an honorable discharge signed by General George Washington on June 11, 1783, while serving as a Sergeant in the Invalid Corps.

Family: Married Lois Stevens in Wells, VT, in 1798. His widow later received a pension based on his service. 

Oliver Holt

A Revolutionary War Soldier with ties to Cattaraugus County.

Background: Very little is known of him, but he likely resided near Steamburg, NY.

Military Record: He migrated from Andover, VT, after 1800. His name is recorded on the 1840 pension list for Cattaraugus County, at which time he was 84 years old.

Samuel Hoard

A Revolutionary War Soldier with ties to Cattaraugus County.

Life: Born in Rhode Island in 1758; died in Fluvanna, NY, in 1846. Lived in Conewango for a time.

Service: Private in Capt. Stephen Miles’ Co., Col. Killian Van Rensselaer’s Albany County Militia.

Nathaniel Harrington

Revolutionary War Soldier with ties to Cattaraugus County.

Life: Born in Foster, RI, in 1757; died in Little Valley, NY, in 1838 at age 76.

Service: Served in the Rhode Island Militia.

Pension: Granted a pension in October 1833 for $80.00 per annum.

David Grannis

Life: Died January 7, 1834, at age 79. Buried in the Old Cemetery at Gowanda, reportedly the first burial there.

Service: Served in the Connecticut Line and fought in the Battles of Long Island and White Plains.

Family: His widow, Clarissa, received a pension until her death in 1852.
